Rossendale Miscellany:

News, notes and queries

At our last meeting, we combined our Christmas Festivities with a celebration of Mary Davison's 80th birthday. Mary has asked me to thank everyone for the cake, presents and best wishes.

Can you help?

RILEY/ WOLSTENHOLM/ REHOBOTH CHAPEL

David Riley- Member No. 8708 tells me that he has just found some information about his Great Grandfather John Riley born in Higher Booths in 1834. He was married to Mary Wolstenholm in 1854 and attended a Baptist Chapel in Goodshaw Fold, known as Reothath Chapel. Can anyone give him any information regarding this chapel? Are there any records in existence?

David has inherited John Riley family Bible with all the dates of his eleven children - their birth marriage and death recorded. Mary's DoB is also there.. He has photographs of them all passed down. The information which mentions the Rehobath chapel is on a large sheet of paper and is an attempt at a family tree. The hand writing is that of his Aunt, Mary Riley (b 1900) who was interested in family history.

Newchurch in Rossendale Parish Registers.

Update from Craig Thornber.

He writes:

Last week I finished a table of burials from 1723 to 1772, in alphabetical order, similar to that for the baptisms. The LPRS version of baptisms, marriages and burials is finished with all the indexing and just needs the introduction. In the New Year I will produce alphabetical versions of the marriages too.

Missing and Dilapidated BTs.

On my last trip to Preston. I checked the BTs [Bishops' Transcripts] for the second volume up to the end of 1788. One or two sections of BTs are missing from the film version and this must have caused difficulties for many family historians. I have also been looking at a paper register held at Manchester Central Library which is in a very dilapidated condition but covers some baptisms from the 1780s and 1790s and burials from that period up to 1812. The edges are badly damaged with loss of dates in many places even since the time that Milton Ormerod looked at them. From the checking so far, these versions are very similar to the BTs, in part because the spellings of surnames and place names are less variable at this time. There are still ten more years of BTs to do before I reach the point where the registers restart.

Rakefoot Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Crawshawbooth.

Late and Adult Baptisms 1836 - 1837

It is clear from the Rakefoot registers that there was a campaign to have members baptised prior to the advent of Civil Registration on 1st July 1837.

At that time a copy register had to be sent to the Public Record Office.
