In 1874 the Rev. Jonas Smith resigned from Ebenezer Baptist, taking with him several of the members. The first services for this breakaway group was held in rented rooms and then in the Co-operative Hall. In January 1875 the "Gospel Mission" as it became known was founded.

At first in consisted mainly of Rev Smith's old flock but by July 1876 its numbers had reached 56. The church continued with Rev. Smith in charge and with no other officials until he retired due to ill health and died on the 26th September 1880. From this time on the weekly services were taken by local preachers and special guest preachers.

In 1921 with the building falling in to disrepair it was decided to merge with South Street General Baptist under the title of Mount Olivet and South Street Baptist, and this continued until the closure on the last Sunday of December 1962.
