ASHWORTH/ VARLEY/ LORD
Dale from
Bournemouth, email: Get2dah@aol.com
is seeking
information on
(1) James Harrison
born about 1811. He was married to Betty Heyworth in 1836 at
Newchurch. In 1857 they were living at Isle of Man, Lumb. He only
knows of 2 children (there must be more); Sarah born 1840 who
married Samuel Lord and William born 1857 (his g. grandfather).
(2) Robert Ashworth
father of Sarah Ashworth (2xg grandmother) born 1831 who married
Hiles Varley.
Lancashire BMD -
Hyndburn and
Rossendale
The first 3,701
marriages from the Hyndburn Offices went live on the internet on
Sunday 31st August. The project which will eventually see all birth,
marriages and deaths from 1837 to 1950 is going extremely well. A
team of volunteers from both The Rossendale and Hyndburn Branches of
the LFHHS have been working very hard. both indexing and checking
the marriages over the last 2 months, but more volunteers are needed
especially with the checking procedure which involves spending a
couple of hours in the local registrars each week. If you can help
or for more information contact Jackie Ramsbottom on 01254 394794 or
email to jax@grane92.freeserve.co.uk
LFHHS - Draft
Constitution
Some concern was
expressed about the wording of our present constitution. A new draft
has been prepared which based on the Charity Commissioner’s new
model; it retains our aims and objectives.
Copies of the new
draft are available for consultation. Any comments should be made to
your Executive Representative (Kathleen Ashburner) who will take
them to the November Executive meeting. It will be submitted to the
Charity Commission for their views and with Executive’s agreement it
will be presented to the 2004 AGM for its approval.
Civil
Registration - Proposed Changes
The Government’s
long awaited public consultation document on the proposed changes to
the Civil Registration Services in England and Wales was issued on
10th July 2003. Copies can be downloaded from www.
statistics.gov.uk/registration/whitepaper/default.asp
A summary of the
changes has been prepared by Tony Foster (LFHHS Chairman) . He has
attempted to highlight the essential changes as they relate to
family historians. It no way negates the need to consult the
original document. Pages 90 - 130 are of particular relevance,
paragraphs (6.1.1 - 8.3.30).
Individual
responses to the proposals need to be made by 24th October to
Lorraine Cole. Civil Registration Review Consultation, Room 126,
General Register Office, Smedley Hydro, Trafford Road, Southport PR8
2HH.
Copies of the
proposals are available for you to take home and consider. The
Society will be making its own response, comments should be made to
Tony Foster by 20th September.

How Odd! From
the Bolton Chronicle 22 Feb. 1834
Burial of an Odd
Woman- The first funeral by the society of Independent Odd Women at
J. Hargreaves the Golden Cup Inn, Haslingden, and which has been
founded four years, took place on Wednesday 12th Inst. The
procession headed by the Rev. W. Gray and a band of music and
consisting of 140 sisters, presented the most solemn scene that has
ever been witnessed in the town.- The regularity and decorum
observed both by the procession and the bystanders reflected the
greatest credit on them.
They didn’t name
the lady. How odd!
