LANCASHIRE FAMILY HISTORY AND HERALDRY SOCIETY
Rossendale Branch Newsletter March 1998
Rita and Valerie would like to
thank everyone who took part in our Genealogical Quiz in February.
Our congratulations go to Evelyn Scholes on winning the Beginners
Quiz. I hope everyone now knows that the Chairman of the LFH&HS is
Terry Walsh! Our particular thanks go to our two brave Brains Trust
teams.
"The Pedigree Chums" otherwise Jean
Harrison, Michael Hiltua and Evelyn Scholes were captained by John
Dalton and "the Roots Group" comprising Maureen Hodgkinson, Paula
Matthews and Wilf Day were captained by Brenda Kershaw. The Pedigree
Chums won this very close contest with a final score of 52 to 51.
Perhaps we should say they won by a wet nose and were definitely not
barking up the wrong tree!
HEIRLOOM EVENING
You are reminded that next month we
have our Heirloom Evening. You are asked to bring a memento of your
family. It doesn’t have to be valuable in monetary terms.
Just something that is precious to
you, a medal, a kettle, a Christening gown, a photograph, a back
scratcher, something whereby you can say "here hangs a tale...." and
tell us something about your childhood or that of your parents and
grandparents. Think about it, they say everyone has a story to tell.
AGM. If you wish to air any matter
at the AGM or if you wish to serve on the committee in any capacity,
please inform our Chairman John Dalton tonight.
Civil Registration Certificates.
From April certificates will cost
£6.50 on personal application at the Family Record Centre and from
Local Registrars. Postal requests to Southport with full reference
will go down to £9.50.
COMING EVENTS:
9th May 1998. Don’t forget to book
for our own (LFH&HS) One Day Conference and AGM.

did you pay this year’s
subscription?

History Societies. 21st Annual One Day Conference- hosted by Cumbria
FHS, will be held at the Crooklands Hotel, Nr. Kendal. There is a

World Cup tickets!

The PRO has applied for lottery
funding in its bid to finish filming the First World War Soldiers’
Documents, Burnt Series (WO 363). If the application is successful
filming should be completed by the end of 2002. If it is turned
down, despite help from the Genealogical Society of Utah, who are
filming letters A to E, it might take until the middle of the next
century for all 33,000 boxes to be filmed. Letters of support should
be sent to Dr. Elizabeth Hallam Smith, Director of Public Services,
Public Record Office, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 4DU.
