Did you miss....
the Society’s AGM
and conference ?
This was held at
the University of Central Lancashire on May 25th 2002. Approximately
65 people attended. Terry Walsh and Dorothy Haworth were there to
sell books and microfiche. We had three excellent and interesting
talks. William Taylor (ex President) and Joyce Winter (former
Secretary of the Blackburn Group, were elected as Honorary Vice
Presidents for their work on behalf of the Society.
Mark Fletcher
described the relaunch of the Society’s Pedigree Referral Index.
All members will be
able to have their surname interests entered into a new computer
index. Full details will be in the May edition of "Lancashire."
Did you miss....
our talk by Gloria
Oates OBE?
Mrs. Oates told us
about her year of office as High Sheriff of Lancashire.
The Office of High
Sheriff is at least 1000 years old, having its roots in Saxon times.
It is the oldest secular office under the Crown. The High Sheriff is
the Sovereign’s representative in the county
for all matters
relating to the judiciary and the maintenance of law and order.
The duties of the
High Sheriff include:
Attendance at Royal
visits to the county.
The well being and
protection of High Court Judges in the county on circuit.
The execution of
High Court Writs and Orders, through the Under Sheriff.
The maintenance of
the loyalty of subjects to the crown.
In practice some of
these duties are delegated to the professional services.
Mrs. Oates said she
had visited a number of schools during her year of office. She found
some disappointment among the younger children, who thought she
should be wearing a Stetson and toting a six gun.
It was especially
interesting to see her new Coat of Arms, which will now be displayed
in Lancaster Castle. She told us how the arms had been drawn up to
depict her family name and former occupation in the field of
education etc.
Family History
1973 - 2003
Next year will be
the 30th anniversary of the Society. Rodney and Beth Hampson (former
officials of the Society) are planning to compile a record of the
Society’s doings so far.
They would like
details and photographs from the archives, of the various groups
within the society. Do any of you have photographs taken during
exhibitions, conferences social events or project work? They will
copy any pictures used and return the originals. I will be willing
to pass on any memorabilia or reminiscences to Rodney and Beth.
