A Family History Day -hosted by The Family History Society of Cheshire for the North West Group of the Federation of Family History Societies. It will be held at the Manchester Metropolitan University Crewe + Alsager Faculty on the Alsager Campus.

"The Cup of Love" - the Spring Conference of the Federation of FHS will be held at Leicester University, Oadby. The theme of the conference will be to explore some of the more extraordinary goings-on of our ancestors.

Rossendale Ancestry:

1. Kathleen Rodgers writes "I should like to hear from anyone who can tell me something about the parents of Lawrence HOYLE, or his wife Martha, of Broadclough, my gx3 grandparents who were married in 1806. They had at least 4 children, Joshua born c.1810 who built Olive Mill in 1860, Margaret born 1812, Timothy born 1815, Caleb born 1819. Lawrence and Martha lived at Stubbylee in 1820. He was buried in 1823 in Ebenezer Baptist graveyard. The parents of Lawrence remain a mystery, but the obituary of Joshua HOYLE in 1900 stated that Joshua had ancestors who lived at Lee Farm. I cannot find a Hoyle connection, possibly the link was Martha who was a LORD of Broadclough. I think that an Ann LORD married James Hoyle of Lee in 1780. email Alan.Rodgers@which.net Tel. 01865 862333.

2. Joan Walmsley, "The Willows" Whinney Lane, Langho, Blackburn, Lancs. BB4 BDQ says "I would like to thank members of Rossendale Branch for their help in enlarging the family tree from Jonathan HARTLEY and his wife Susannah (nee Foulds) who were married in 1836 at Colne. In 1841 they were living at Balladen and in 1851 at Barlow Fold. They were both buried at Longholme Methodist churchyard. Their daughter, Sarah (1841-1875) was my gt. grandmother and I treasure some of her belongings which have been passed down to me. I would very much like to contact any other descendants of Jonathan and Susannah, and anyone with an interest in the life and times of the area.

3. My gx3 grandparents were James Haworth and Isabella Newman who married on 21 Nov. 1836 at Newchurch in Rossendale. Was James bap. 9 February 1813, son of Daniel & Ann Haworth, Top o’th Heights, my James? Where is Top o’th Heights? Does it still exist?

Henry Stephenson

Henry Stephenson, historian, antiquarian, botanist, and geologist was born at Oswaldtwistle on Nov. 15th 1843. Through his father (also Henry) he claimed descent from Lady Georgiana Dashwood, a noted beauty who had gambled away all her family’s land and estates. Henry, senior, was born in Lincolnshire, he married Nancy Heys, a Baxenden girl (her grandfather was Thomas Pearson of Higher Laund, Baxenden) at Church Kirk, Nov. 7th 1841. The family subsequently moved to Haslingden, where Nancy opened a baker’s shop at 16 Bury Road.
After working in a mill for some years, Henry (Jnr) was invited to become a master at the National School. He became Headmaster from 1875 - 1890. At the early age of 47 he retired.
According to his obituary Haslingden Gazette 23rd Sept. 1822 "From 1890 onwards his life was very hard and very dark; although he never wanted friends who were prepared to re-establish him, their help had to take a restricted form out of kindness." Henry had amassed a huge collection of historical and genealogical data but "bit by bit he had to part with everything he possessed and it is fortunate that for the most part it passed into good hands."
He died in Haslingden infirmary, where he had been an inmate for many years; a bachelor, he had only one cousin and a more distant relative. Mr. J.R. Hargreaves and Major David Halstead paid for his funeral. He is buried with his parents in Haslingden churchyard.
