LANCASHIRE FAMILY HISTORY AND HERALDRY SOCIETY
Rossendale Branch Newsletter August 2000
Frank Hargreaves
___Memorial____
Frank died in
November 1998 aged 74. He had for many years been Project Organiser
for the Rossendale Branch, until ill health forced him to give up a
this pursuit. In his memory the members of this Branch have
purchased the Phillimore Atlas and Index, 2nd edition; edited by
Cecil Humphrey-Smith. which has been added to our library stock.
This very fine book comprises maps of the pre 1832 parishes of
England, Wales and Scotland. At the rear of the book there is an
index taken from a Gazeeter of 1834. Each parish is shown together
with a listing which indicates original registers, years covered by
the IGI, local marriage indexes, copies of registers and
non-conformist registers held at the Public Record Office.
Haslingden Roots
If you have
ancestors in the Haslingden area you may be interested to know that
this research group now meets every Monday at St. James’ Church
Haslingden from 7.30 to 9.00. Visitors are welcome.
Did you miss....
Our vist to
Blackburn Library?
On July 5th we
visited Blackburn library to see the facilities which have been
offered to the society. The Family History section consists of 7
microfiche readers, 5 film readers and a reader-printer. You can
have east access to all the Civil Registration Indexes from 1837 -
1966 on microfiche. Also available on fiche is the IGI and all our
project fiche. The 1881 census is available on CD and the Vital
Records Index is on order.
A booking system is
inoperation for film and fiche viewers.
There is a shelf
containing magazines from all the Societies with whom we exchange
journals. So if your interests are in Bristol and Avon or Ontario in
Canada you can examine their magazines on the premises.
Whilst a great deal
of the material available is Blackburn biased, this will be
redressed as the LFHHS stock is built up.
I have been given a
Holdings List this includes various general directories covering
1818 - 1966. The Indexes to wills published by the Record Society
and other series publications such as The Chetham Society Volumes.
There are a number
of Blackburn newspapers on microfilm. The Northern Daily Telegraph
(now the Lancashire Evening Telegraph) is available from 1866 to
