1. Graham Jackson
of Penny Cottage, 13 Markfield Road, Groby, Leics. LE6 DFL has
recently joined the society. He has a marriage 2 Sept. 1885 showing
Elizabeth LEWIS 20, marrying Robert ENTWISTLE 25, at Dean in Lumb.
Elizabeth’s father, John was living at Spring Gardens, Newchurch in
1881 but had died by 1885. Any info. would be welcome.
2. Miss C. Dee, 21
Brockfield Close, Offerton, Stockport, Cheshire, SK1 4NA.has written
to tell me about her WILKINSON, PERRIER, TOMLINSON & WORSWICK
families.
James WILKINSON and
his wife Isabella came to Waterfoot from Earby in Yorkshire in 1859.
From 1963, James occupied a position with the Newchurch spinning Co.
He was connected with the Baptist Church at Waterfoot, where he was
the teacher of the young men’s class for over 20
years. His wife
Isabella died in 1914 aged 80. Where were they both buried? Their
son John Fredick was born in 1857, he married Lydia Perrier (a
British Subject born in France) in 1893 at Bethel Baptist Church.
John had lost an arm in a cotton mill, he later became a school
master. He gave lectures in the area on English and maths. In 1903
he invented a perpetual calendar, the book describing this is kept
in the British Library in London.
John F’s elder
brother Arthur went to Sydney, Australia in 1883. He introduced
Trickett’s slippers into that country, where he had a market stall.
On a visit to England in 1923, he died and was buried at Earby
Cemetery.
Charles Singleton
WILKINSON, a younger brother worked at Trickett’s . He was the first
Secretary and Cashier of the firm, for many years before retiring to
Southport. His wife was Emma WORSWICK. He died before his daughter
married Walter TOMLINSON in 1923. John Frederick’s other brothers
and sisters were Albert, Annie, Lilla and Ellen Ann. Walter
TOMLINSON was born in 1898, the son of John William TOMLINSON. Miss
Dee has provided me with a family tree and some presscuttings. She
would be pleased to hear from anyone who remembers this family or
who can give any extra information.
3. Barbara J.
Oldroyd, 2 Glenavon, Annewood Park, New Milton, Hants. BH25 6TU
would like information on her maternal ancestors:
James HEAP of Heald
and Alice LORD of Doals married at St. Nicholas’ Church 28 July
1834. In 1851 they were at Haslingden Road, Bacup, aged 48 and 45.
Their children were John (16), Alice (12), James (7) and Jonathan
(3). Father James & son John were both cordwainers. John later moved
to Nantwich.

Our Internet
Evening?
It was good to see
so many beginners and "experts" crowded round the 9 available
computers. A list of useful websites was published in our last
newsletter. If anyone would like to add to this list, please let me
know. For those of you who tried to find the Lancashire Record
Office Website this should have read

The Cunliffe Letters
In my last
newsletter. I described the letters of Jonathan Cunliffe, which had
been purchased by a local man. Jonathan wrote the letters to John
Cunliffe of Hareholme from 1830 - 1848.
I have found that
John Cunliffe was 74 in 1841, his wife Lucy was 71. Still at home
were Ruth 25 and Henry 15. John Cunliffe married Lucy Hopkinson at
Bury 12th Sept. 1799.
One of our members
Peter Cooper, of Powys tells me that Jonathan was his great
Grandfather. He married Mary Ann Bogg, whose father was a Battery
Sergt. Major, who had fought in the Penisular War. Jonathan’s
service record shows that he enlisted in the Royal Marines in 1830.
He sailed in 7 different ships before he retired as a colour
serjeant in 1850. The records also relate that he was under fire off
the coast of Syria viz. " at the bombardment of Beyrout, Sidon and
the taking of St. Jean, D’Acre." In 1881 he was living in Burnley.
In 1871 & 1861 he was in Whitworth. |
