Sunnyside Methodist Church
Lord
Street, Crawshawbooth
On the
16th of July 1834 the Reverend John Verity preached to
ten people at Sunnyside and again on the 16th of
September to fifty people for what was the beginning of
Primitive Methodism in Crawshawbooth. In 1839 the
congregation had risen sufficiently for them to rent the
old block print works at the bottom of Pinner Lane in
place of of one storey house they were using in Pinner
Lane.
On the
20th October 1877 the corner stone for the Lord
Street Church was laid by James Whittaker of Helmshore
and Richard Ingham of Crawshawbooth with the
address given by Rev Sheen and the service was
conducted by the Rev George Mitchell. The Church was
opened for worship on 11th April 1879(Good Friday) and
continued in use until the late 1940's when the Church
was closed and the pulpit and communion rails were
transferred to the Sunday School, which had opened on
1st October 1898, and where services were held until the
early 1970's. The church was demolished in March 1952
and the Sunday School is now used as business premises.
